Analysts at Forrester have identified 15 different emerging technologies that chief information officers (CIOs) need to get to grips with in order to succeed, according to the company’s latest report.

The 15 chosen technologies were split into four groups by Forrester: Interaction platforms; business innovation platforms; aggregation and delivery platforms; and infrastructure and context platforms, reports

In the past, countless CIOs have not kept an eye on emerging technologies because their main responsibilities included reducing operation costs, keeping infrastructure running and managing new projects. However, the rising number of tech disruptions due to new technologies means businesses are now judged on how well they deliver, manage and understand this tech.

Business solutions-wise, CIOs should monitor technologies which allow customers to alter product design decisions and a firm’s processes. The analyst also notes that CIOs should watch out for the Internet of Things (IoT) in the future, and in particular any products which streamline business processes without requiring too much custom work, reports

Even emerging interactive technologies (such as wearables, virtual reality goggles and eye-tracking software) are important for CIOs to understand, Forrester says, as they’re likely to have an impact on how businesses interact with their customers.

“Business innovation is the product of networks of firms that play different roles in value creation and business process,” the analyst states. “CIOs should actively map and manage the role their firm plays relative to others as inventors of new things, transformers of ideas into offerings, financiers of new ideas, and brokers that match up participants or create markets.”
